Commercial Food Heat Lamps: Complete Buying Guide for Buffet, Carving & Kitchen

Short answer: a commercial food heat lamp is an infrared heating fixture mounted 30-90 cm above food to keep it at serving temperature (above 60°C / 140°F). BAVA supplies four types: countertop heat lamp stations, single/double-head flexible lamps, ceiling pendant and retractable hanging lamps, and overhead strip heaters — all in 250W or 275W, 110V or 220V, with stainless steel or marble bases.

What Is a Food Heat Lamp?

A food heat lamp (also called a buffet heat lamp, food warming lamp, or carving station lamp) uses infrared radiation to keep cooked food hot without continuing to cook it. Unlike a chafing dish that uses steam, a heat lamp works from above — making it ideal for carved meats, fries, fried chicken, pizza, and display food where moisture control matters. The most common wattage is 250W or 275W infrared bulbs, running at 220V (EU/Asia) or 110V (North America).

How to Choose the Right Heat Lamp

Wattage rule: plan on 250W per 0.25 m² of food surface at 40cm height. For ceiling-mounted units at 60-90cm, use 275W. A single 250W head covers about 30 × 40 cm; a double-head station covers 60 × 40 cm.

Mounting style: choose countertop stations for flexible layouts, ceiling pendants for open kitchens and display areas, retractable cords when you need to adjust height between services, and strip heaters for continuous buffet lines.

Finish options: most heat lamps come in black, stainless steel, gold, rose gold, and antique copper to match your kitchen or buffet design. Marble-base models add a premium look for carving stations.

Installation Height and Safety

The lamp-to-food distance is critical: too close and the food dries out or burns; too far and it drops below 60°C (140°F). Industry guidelines recommend:

Always use infrared-specific bulbs (250W or 275W), keep food covered when not actively serving, and rotate or baste meats every 10-15 minutes to prevent surface drying. More details in how many watts for a food heat lamp and how long food can stay under a heat lamp.

Frequently Asked Questions

What wattage food heat lamp do I need?

For most buffet and carving stations, one 250W head per 60cm of counter space is sufficient. If the lamp is ceiling-mounted above 60cm, upgrade to 275W. A strip heater for a 1.2m buffet line needs 1200W single row or 1200W double row for faster recovery.

Can I use a heat lamp at 110V for the US market?

Yes. Every BAVA heat lamp model is available in 110-120V/60Hz or 220-240V/50Hz versions. Specify your country at quotation and we will ship the correct plug and voltage.

What is the difference between pendant and retractable heat lamps?

A pendant heat lamp uses a fixed 1.5m wire at a set height. A retractable (telescopic) heat lamp uses a coiled cord that extends from 60cm to 180cm, so you can raise it when not in use and lower it during service. Choose retractable for flexible operations, pendant for fixed installation.

Do heat lamps dry out food?

Infrared heat dries food only when the lamp is too close (under 30cm) or food is left uncovered for hours. At the recommended 30-45cm distance with occasional basting or rotation, most foods hold well for 2-3 hours without significant drying.

What is the minimum order quantity for wholesale?

MOQ is 50 pieces per model, and you can mix different models in one container. Sample orders of 1-2 units are available for testing before bulk purchase.
