Chafing Dish Food Pan Sizes: Which Replacement Pan Fits Your Chafer?

2026-04-16 BAVA Team Blog

Short answer: a full-size chafer takes a GN 1/1 pan, 530×325 mm; a half-size takes GN 1/2 at 325×265 mm. Depth is usually 65 mm for entrées and 100 mm for sauces. Measure the frame opening, not the old pan — a dented pan measures short. See pans in our chafing dish range.

Your chafing dish pan got dented. You need a replacement. What size? Is it full-size or half-size? What depth will fit your chafer?

Here's the chafing dish food pan size guide. Standard sizes, depths, and what to buy.

Chafing Dish Food Pan Sizes

PRO TIP: Buy extra pans.

While one pan is being washed, the other is in the chafer. Never run out. Buy 2-3 extra pans per chafing dish.

KEY TAKEAWAY: Full size = 9L. Half size = 4.5L. Standard depth = 10cm.

Most commercial chafing dishes use a full-size 1/1 GN pan. Measure your old pan before ordering.

What to Know Before Ordering

  • Measure your old pan. Don't guess. Length x width x depth.
  • Material: 304 stainless. Not 201. See grades guide.
  • Buy extras. 2-3 spares per chafer. Event day = no time to shop.
  • Lid compatibility: Some lids only fit specific pan depths.

See our chafing dish size guide for more.

The Bottom Line

Full-size pan = 9L, 53x33cm. Half-size = 4.5L. Standard depth = 10cm. Measure your old pan before ordering. Buy 2-3 spares per chafer. Always 304 stainless. Don't run out on event day.

How to measure before you order

Measure the inside of the frame at the rim: the pan sits on that ledge, so the opening — not the pan — is the true size. A GN 1/1 frame reads 530×325 mm at the opening. If your measurement is 5–10 mm smaller, you have a nominal pan and standard GN inserts will not seat.

Then measure depth from the rim to the base. 65 mm is the common catering depth; 100 mm appears on sauce and stew pans. A pan that is too deep sits closer to the lid, steams the food and slows refills.

Depth, volume and what fits

A GN 1/1 pan at 65 mm holds about 8.8 L to the rim and 7.6 L in service — the 8 qt chafer everyone quotes. At 100 mm the same footprint holds about 11.5 L, which is a banquet pan, not a buffet pan.

Check the material too: 0.6–0.8 mm 304 stainless survives stacking and washing; 0.4–0.5 mm dents on the first van trip and warps if the bath runs dry. The pan is the part that gets replaced most often, and the gauge is why.

Ordering spares

Order two pans, not one. A single replacement pan arrives with a different batch finish more often than suppliers admit, and a mismatched pair looks worse than a matched set with a spare in the store. Buy the same gauge and depth, and keep the old pan for dry storage of utensils.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full-size or half-size?

Full-size is GN 1/1, 530×325 mm. Half-size is GN 1/2, 325×265 mm — two fit in a full frame.

How deep should the pan be?

65 mm for entrées and sides, 100 mm for sauces and stews.

Will a standard GN pan fit any chafer?

No. Cheap frames use nominal pans; check the frame opening before ordering a GN insert.

How much does a GN 1/1 hold?

About 8.8 L to the rim, 7.6 L in service — roughly 45–50 portions of 150 g.

What gauge should I buy?

0.6–0.8 mm, 304 stainless. Thinner pans dent and warp.
